Upfront

If you looked for us on the Mallway last Saturday at Sale Away, here's why you couldn't find us. . .

bootAs we mentioned in previous correspondence, local Obama organizers reserved a booth at the UA Women's Club (UAWC) Sale Away flea market this past Saturday to distribute information, sell Obama gear and to register people to vote. They were kind enough to allow UAPA to peddle our Obama wares and to join their effort. We encouraged the progressive community to attend and to support the UAWC's fundraiser, which awards scholarships to high school graduates, and to get their Obama gear and maybe register to vote, too.

The Obama organizers completed and submitted a written application to participate in the event and were up-front about the purpose of their booth, so that no one was misled. The organizers paid the required fee to the UAWC and the UAWC accepted the application and the fee.

Yet, apparently as a result of some negative comments that were made about the presence of the pro-Obama booth, the UAWC unfortunately reacted in a knee-jerk manner by buckling to the demands of those complaining and summarily evicted the Obama/UAPA group. Even though the participants did everything right and followed the requirements set forth by the UAWC, they were treated unfairly Saturday. Moreover, the action taken by the UAWC to ignore the contract it had with the participants and to evict them was just plain wrong.

A letter from a member of both UAPA and the UAWC has been sent to the Women's Club leadership expressing outrage at the unjust handling of the situation.

So, if you wondered what happened to the Obama booth at Sale Away, now you know the rest of the story. . .

New American Forum: A Warm Welcome?

Join the conversation. July 9, 2008 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. IBEW Hall

flagsSince the 15th century, immigrants have come to America to find their dreams or to escape treachery, war, and starvation. They have not always been greeted warmly or treated well. Today, politicians are faced with many opposing opinions on how to address immigration and immigrants in a post 9/11 era. At the same time, new American citizens are confronted with multiple issues and concerns as they attempt to become an integral part of the fabric that is America.

As we enter another election season, join an open forum sponsored by the Coalition of Democratic and Progressive Organizations, of which UAPA is a member, to hear the concerns of central Ohio's new American citizens from the Latino and Somali communities. What are the real issues? What are the real solutions? Listen to their stories. Hear how your candidates respond. Learn what we, as Democratic and Progressive community leaders, can do to make certain our new American neighbors have access to the polls and the information they need to vote in November.

As a forerunner to Wednesday's New American forum, tune in to Mike Cole's program, WVKO 1580 AM, on Monday July, 7 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. to hear these issues discussed.

The IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Hall is located at 23 West 2nd Ave in Columbus, 43201. It is just one block west of High Street on 2nd Ave and minutes from UA. We hope to see you there.
