During the 2017 City Council election, postcards with gutter level attacks on several candidates were sent to nearly everyone in UA. The funders of the PAC that sent them were unknown until after the election, but the treasurer of record was Angela Lanctot who is currently running for Council. We are publishing the following in the hope that last minute sleazy attacks on candidates will not reappear this year.

Regarding impeachment, President Andrew Johnson served out Abraham Lincoln’s term and was known to be a racist and involved in some of the worst aspects of Reconstruction attempts. According to “The Impeachers” by Brenda Wineapple, Johnson barely escaped impeachment conviction by narrow voting.

If the front page of today’s Dispatch doesn’t convince everyone that Climate Change is real, I don’t know what will.
In your story titled “Deductibles added for wind, hale [sic] damage” you explain why home insurance companies are beginning to charge Ohio homeowners more for damage caused by wind and hail. But there are no increased charges for fire or theft claims.

Defending his vote against universal background checks for gun purchases, Senator Rob Portman is quoted in today’s Dispatch, (6/19, page A15), saying “We want to do things that are actually going to help.”
The obvious question is: “Help who?”
According to the organization ‘Mayors Against Illegal Guns’ Senator Portman received $1,314,279 in campaign donations from the gun manufacturers. Certainly his vote helped them.

AG calls for discrimination by bosses
I see that Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine wants to allow private employers to deny their workers access to birth control based on the bosses’ religious beliefs (“DeWine backs wider religious exemption,” Dispatch article, Saturday).

I couldn’t agree more with Jerry Lawson’s idea, (Dispatch, November 14th letter), that the “Electoral College should be revised.
I couldn’t agree less with the revision he, (and Secretary of State Jon Husted), suggested . . . selecting electors based on the vote in each Congressional district.
